Crime Profiles

Two recent incidents worth reporting... First, on North Clarkson Street early last Friday morning, two women were used as "bait" to lure six men into a pickup truck.  The six men were driven into east Charlotte and robbed at gunpoint.  There is a pretty obvious lesson here.
Second, there was a burglary late Monday night at Clarkson Place.  The burglars entered through an unlocked rear entrance and stole items throughout the residence.  There was no outside lighting illuminated at the time of the incident, and several tree limbs obscured the area.  Please be sure to use exterior lighting at night, and cut back overgrown limbs.  And always remember to lock your doors.

Happy Meck Dec Day

The Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence is a document purportedly signed on May 20, 1775 - more than a year before the United States Declaration of Independence. Though no copies remain of the original - leading to speculation that it didn't exist - the image at left suggests how it would have appeared in print.
Though its legitimacy may never be proven, the "Meck Dec" illustrates the independent spirit of Charlotte that certainly lives today. The date is celebrated still on the North Carolina State Seal and Flag, and was once a state holiday.

At last month's Third Ward meeting we discussed the current status of Charlotte's proposed Streetcar system.  The Infrastructurist blog offers an interesting graphic of streetcar systems across the US.  Charlotte undoubtedly will be competing for federal dollars with many of the other systems listed.

DonorsChoose, Continued

The second DonorsChoose gift was to Irwin Avenue Elementary, a school in Third Ward. The association funded a project entitled Learning About Our Neighborhood, described as follows: "The second grade is going to start a new social studies unit. We are requesting construction paper and card stock to for projects that will share what the children learned. The children will be learning about how things changed over time and the impact of these changes. We would like the children to create graphic organizers and field trip journals. Our classes will be going on a walking field trip through the historical neighborhood where is school is located. Students will be able to see turn of the century homes and building in contrast to the skyscrapers above the tree line in the park."
Mrs. E, the instructor who set up the project, sends her thanks: "Dear Third Ward Neighborhood Association, thank you for your generous donation to my class. It was wonderful the way you responded to this need so quickly. My students learn best when they can do hands-on activities. The supplies will make learning more fun and interesting. These materials are so appreciated. We are so lucky that there are people like you who want to give to our class. Thank you for your donation and kindness."

DonorsChoose Gifts

Thanks to gift cards provided by CMS and DonorsChoose, the neighborhood association was able to make contributions to specific projects at three area schools.
Our largest gift was to West Charlotte High School, which had requested a donation that will make full-color, take-home worksheets available to students for their study of human anatomy.
Mrs. F., the instructor who will utilize this donation, writes: "Thank you for giving my students the opportunity to gain the most knowledge they can in Medical Science, by seeing things in different colors ... This will really aid in my teaching and their understanding of structures of the human body ... I am so excited that you have helped to make our dreams come true ... We all are so excited and ready to get started. I am planning lessons already to utilize our new technology. Thank you once again for your generous donation."
The project was eligible for a matching grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which allowed the project to be fully funded with our seed donation.
If you are interested in providing donations or volunteer labor to local schools, contact me.
