Sprinter Service Begins September 14th

CATS' (Airport) Sprinter bus line will traverse Third Ward on Trade Street, with local stops on Poplar and Cedar Streets and fares of $1.50 each way. The Sprinter's new website includes a link to a schedule and the map.

Charlotte Film Festival

The Fourth Annual Charlotte Film Festival is coming up September 21-27: "The first goal of the Charlotte Film festival is to provide our community with an extraordinary cultural experience
by screening the most important works of independent film we can get our hands on."

Streetcar Design Funding Delayed

A $4.5 million contract for streetcar system design was vetoed by Mayor McCrory on Monday night. Though he supports the line, there is no money budgeted for its construction at this time.
The veto could be overridden by the council next month. See this Observer article for more.

Blues, Brews, & BBQ 2009

September 11th & 12th, Blues, Brews & BBQ is an annual event featuring blues music, an array of beer samples, and some of the best barbecue you will find anywhere. This year's festival will be held Uptown. Interactive cooking demonstrations and contests are available all day. This festival celebrates the best of the southern cuisine and southern music.
A related event on the morning of the 12th is the Hog Jog 5k run, benefiting the Charlotte Regional Sports Commission. The race will be routed through Third Ward, with most runners expected between 8:15a and 8:45a. Volunteers and CMPD will be providing course management that morning. Irwin Avenue Elementary

Third Ward's own Irwin Avenue Elementary has received its certification as an International Baccalaureate programme, becoming CMS's only county-wide elementary school with this certification. Congratulations to Principal Judy Fahl and the faculty and staff at the school!
The International Baccalaureate was founded in Switzerland in 1968, with a mission "to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect." For more information, see

Third Ward Summer Tailgate Details

Saturday, August 22nd, 11:30a to 1:30p


Kick off the Panthers 2009 season in style with Sir Purr & the Top Cats
Enjoy free food and soft drinks provided by Third Ward Gold Sponsor Hartigan's Irish Pub

The Panthers have kindly donated an authentic pigskin autographed by Steve Smith, a beautiful item valued at $150. Raffle tickets (benefiting the Charlotte Rescue Mission) will be available on site for $5 each; the winner takes home the ball!

Stadium tours are limited so please preregister early! There will be a special (secret!) surprise on the tours. Preregistration via is required! Though additional donations are still encouraged, the first twenty preregistrants will receive a free raffle ticket for the Steve Smith ball!

Airport Sprinter Public Meeting

CATS will begin service of the Airport Sprinter line on Monday, September 14th. The line will cross Third Ward on Trade Street on its way to the Airport (and back). See this flyer for more information.
CATS will host an open house for the Sprinter on Thursday, August 20th, from 6:00p to 8:00p at the West Service Center, 4150 Wilkinson Boulevard.
A map of the line has been requested and should be forthcoming.

Volume 1 of the Wells Fargo Cultural Campus Newsletter can be found here. For those interested in this project, the newsletter is an excellent resource for timetables and information.
Third Ward welcomes employees of Duke Energy, Deloitte, KPMG, Katten Muchin Rosenman, Wells Fargo, and all other companies that will call this site home.

Street Closure

The intersection of West Stonewall Street and South Church Street will close today at 6:30p and reopen at 6:00a on Tuesday, August 11. Local access to businesses will be maintained.
