"The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Planning Department staff will be seeking public input on the topic of Single Room Occupancy Residences (SROs). An SRO is a multi-tenant building that contains between 11 and 120 rooming units, which are available for rental occupancy for periods of seven days or longer. The buildings must contain common open space, such as recreation areas or dining rooms, and provide twenty-four hour on-site management.
SROs are increasingly becoming a viable housing option, both as adaptive reuse and new construction. The purpose of the group will be to review and provide comment on potential updates to the city’s existing zoning regulatory standards for single room occupancy residences and the districts where permitted.
As the Planning Department seeks to review the SRO requirements, public input becomes a vital part of the process. We are seeking volunteers that will provide valuable information throughout the process. The group will be comprised of residents, neighborhood leaders, industry representatives, volunteers, and other interested parties.
If you are interested in participating, please notify us by April 21, 2010. You may sign up on our website at www.charlotteplanning.org and click on the SRO link under 'What’s Hot!' If you prefer, you may contact Zenia Duhaney at 704-336-8310 or e-mail: firstname.lastname@example.org with your name, mailing address, phone number, and e-mail address. Citizens for whom we have an e-mail address on file will receive this notice via e-mail and may sign up directly on line.
The first public input meeting is scheduled for April 27, 2010 at 6:00 p.m. at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center, 600 East Fourth Street, Charlotte, NC 28202 [map].
