Johnson and Wales Homecoming Parade

Johnson and Wales will have the majority of South Cedar Street closed on Saturday morning from 8am-12pm to celebrate their Homecoming.

I wanted to give 3rd Ward a heads up as well as an invitation to have them line Cedar Street to celebrate JWU in the first-ever homecoming parade. The parade starts at 10am and should be completed by 11am. It will go from Draught up Cedar through through Parking Lot A.

Q-City Charlotte BBQ Championship

Hope you will join us for some award-winning ‘cue and performances by the Charlotte Blues Society. Don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions!

Friday - Saturday, Oct. 17-18
11am-9pm both days
Tryon Street between 3rd and 5th

Uptown Charlotte’s 12th annual BBQ Championship is back uptown and going to offer the best BBQ in the nation! This is what used to be called Brews, Blues and BBQ – it was rebranded last year.

For the first time ever, the Q-City Charlotte BBQ Championship will be sanctioned by the North Carolina BBQ Association (NCBBQA), a brand new sanctioning body specifically focused on the craft of North Carolina-style barbecue. The festival will take place on Tryon Street between 3rd and 5th streets.

The competition will be judged by both NCBBQA-sanctioned judges and by interested fans as part of the People’s Choice tastings, which will feature seven restaurants and cook teams competing for the “Porkmaster Trophy.” People’s Choice sampling will be held on Saturday, Oct. 18 from noon until 2pm. Wristbands are $5 each and can be purchased at the Charlotte Blues Society Main Stage at Trade & Tryon Streets. Each $5 wristband equals seven tokens that will allow sampling from each competitor.

More than $12,000 in prize money is up for grabs in categories such as pork shoulder, whole hog, whole chicken, pork ribs, chicken wings, and the “anything but” category – surf, turf or “exotic” meats. The festival will also feature more than 20 food vendors and a ‘Cue Culture Marketplace, powered by Amazon Local Register.

The Charlotte Blues Society stage will be located at the Square at Trade & Tryon and will feature dozens of Blues Society performers throughout the weekend. Cost of admission for the event? It’s all free. More information is available at

*Street closure info:

Finally, the 200 and 300 blocks of East Seventh Street between North College Street and North Brevard Street will periodically close one lane on Saturday, October 18, 2014 and Sunday, October 19, 2014 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. During the times that a lane will be closed, workers will flag traffic one lane at a time. This closure is necessary to accommodate overhead cable and pole installation for the LYNX Blue Line Extension.
